Lake Trout
Deep water warriors of Pipestone Lake
Deep Water Challenge
Pipestone Lake's deep, cold waters provide ideal habitat for lake trout. Reaching depths of up to 120 feet, the lake maintains the cold temperatures that lake trout require to thrive. These powerful fish offer a unique challenge and a welcome change of pace from the more commonly targeted species.
Lake trout are known for their strength and endurance. Fighting a lake trout from deep water is a test of tackle and technique. These fish make powerful runs and use the depth to their advantage. The reward is a beautiful fish with distinctive markings and excellent table fare.
While not as commonly targeted as walleye or pike, lake trout fishing at Pipestone offers excellent opportunities for anglers seeking something different. The deep, clear waters and healthy forage base produce quality fish that make the effort worthwhile.
Proven Techniques
Deep Jigging
Vertical jigging with heavy spoons and jigs is the most effective method. Work deep structure and drop-offs where lake trout hold.
Trolling
Deep-diving crankbaits and spoons trolled along deep contours and over structure. Downriggers or lead core line help reach the proper depth.
Live Bait
Dead bait rigs fished near the bottom in deep water can be deadly. Note: Smelt and other baitfish are not permitted on Pipestone Lake.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring (May-June)
Lake trout can be found in shallower water following ice-out. This is the easiest time to target them before they move deep for summer.
Summer (July-August)
Fish move to deep, cold water. Focus on deep basins, humps, and structure in 40-80 feet of water. Early morning can bring fish to shallower depths.
Fall (September-October)
As water temperatures cool, lake trout become more active and can be found at various depths. This is an excellent time to target them as they feed heavily before winter.
